"PPG
promotes Chrome
Phosphate pretreatment
for the maximum
corrosion protection
available. The
AAMA 2605 Specification
specifies the
use of Chrome
Phosphate to
achieve the
highest possible
corrosion protection.
PPG Duranar
(Kynar) requires
a primer coat
over a Chrome
Phosphate pretreatment
to give the
best possible
paint system
available for
all environments.
The use of a
primer coat
is a must to
prevent filiform
corrosion. One
coat systems
will not prevent
filiform corrosion,
the Europeans
have had numerous
failures using
powder finishes
with no primer
coats. The seacoast
environment
is the ideal
environment
for the formation
of filiform
corrosion."

"PPG Duranar
(Kynar) liquid
spray finishes
are recognized
worldwide as
the leader in
high performance,
low maintenance
coatings. Duranar
is covered by
a 20-year durability
warranty only
as a multi-coat
system, including
a primer coat
over a Chrome
conversion pretreatment
for aluminum
substrates (AAMA
2605 requires
Chrome pretreatment
for compliance).
PPG Industries
has documented
over 30 years
of actual outdoor
exposure data
at our atmospheric
testing sites
in Florida and
on thousands
of projects
worldwide. PPG
Industries does
not offer PVDF
powder finish
(Kynar powder
coat) for the
extrusion market.
From our work
in this area,
we have found
that powder
finishes, in
general, are
subject to extensive
filiform corrosion
when used as
a single coat
system without
primer. The
condition is
compounded when
a chrome-free
pretreatment
is employed.
Consequently,
these single
coat finishes
are not targeted
for the high
performance
market and they
do not pass
the AAMA 2605
High Performance
Specification."

"The question
is whether the
titanium non-chromes
should be called
a paint primer.
The answer is
no. There is
a small amount
of chemistry
found in all
the titanium
non-chromes
that are in
primers, but
that would be
like calling
a wagon a car
just because
it has four
wheels. First,
we call them
pretreatments
or conversion
coatings, not
primers. Second,
titanium non-chromes
are not in the
marketplace
to replace primers.
Third, when
using two coat
Kynar systems,
it is required
that you use
a chrome phosphate
pretreatment.
Fourth, the
coating thickness
of all titanium
non-chromes
is a very small
fraction of
primers. Fifth,
there is little
corrosion resistance
by these non-chromes.
You will need
primers and
paint to give
corrosion resistance.
What pretreatments
do is adhere
paint to the
metal."

"The key is
the Chrome Phosphate
pretreatment
and primer (the
primer also
has chrome).
I am not saying
any more than
what the major
Kynar manufacturers
have been saying
for years. Kynar
has over 30
years of outdoor
exposure and
testing. "
